Description
The site is an old trading harbour, exporting slate and agricultural
produce. There are also limekilns remnants of its industrial past.
The large ruined building was a corn store.
Nearby is the Carreg Sampson Burial Chamber built over 5000 years
ago by a Neolithic tribe who used it for over 100 burials.
The site has very limited parking near the harbour. The slipway
should be kept clear at all times. The first recorded single-handed
sailor to cross the Atlantic landed here over 100 years ago, having
sailed from America in a small open boat.
Activities
Fishing. This is popular along the coast, established tracks
should be used to reach fishing spots. When climbing restrictions
are in place fishermen are asked to avoid the cliff areas to prevent
bird disturbance.
Diving. Parking is a particular problem at Abercastle so cannot
be recommended for visiting clubs or groups over peak periods.
Better to launch from Porthgain or Goodwick.
Kayaking. The harbour itself offers safe, sheltered and interesting
paddling. Outside the harbour strong currents develop off the
headlands and like the rest of this stretch of coast needs to
be treated with considerable respect.
Climbing. Though there are several recorded climbing sites in the
area none have become very popular and much of the fixed protection
and stake belays have disappeared. None seem suitable for group
use. Climbing restrictions apply to Ynys Deullyn but not Craig
Ddu.
Important Information
Cars should be parked with consideration and not cause access
difficulties to gates and driveways.
Vehicles should not block the slipway.
National Trust byelaws apply to their land to the west of Abercastle.
These should be complied with at all times.
The harbour is under the control of Abercastle Boatowners Association.
