Facilities

  • There are no facilities at this site, the nearest car park is at Caerbwdi and the nearest public phone is on the main St Davids road.
  • There is no recognised parking area at Carreg Y Barcud and visitors should make every effort to avoid causing disturbance to locals by keeping passing places, gateways and access drives clear.
  • Visitors are advised to park at the National Trust Car Park in Caerbwdi.

Description

Access to Carreg Y Barcud is normally via the public footpath at Trelerw or along the Coast Path from the car park at Caerbwdi. Trelerw is a working farm the roadside within the hamlet is private and needs to be kept clear for agricultural machinery. The site lies within St.David’s Peninsula Site of Special Scientific Interest, designated for its geological and biological interest. It also lies within the proposed Special Area of Conservation.
The St. David’s Peninsula Coast is nationally important for its maritime vegetation, especially the sea cliff heath, sea cliff grassland and crevice/ledge communities.
Scheduled Ancient monuments can be found at Caerbwdi Bay and the fort site to the west.
The site is grazed by National Trust Ponies.

Activities

Climbing. Carreg y Barcud offers fine slab climbing and most routes can be reached without the need for abseil. Over the years the thin soils at the cliff top which support the lovely flowery grassland have eroded due to trampling. When racking up or lounging please try to keep to hard rock surfaces rather than the undamaged turf.

Important Information

National Trust byelaws apply to the area, these should be complied with at all times.
All those using the tidal zone should be aware of its movements for the day.
Climbers should use established tracks to gain access to routes.
Gardening of routes should be avoided.
Cars must not be parked on the access road to Trelerw, visitors should park in the car park in Caerbwdi.
