Description

The site lies within Castlemartin Cliffs and Dunes Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Broomhill Burrows SSSI. As well as part of the site (to the south) lying in a Special Protection Area and Candidate Special Area of Conservation. Features which are particularly important and that visitors should be aware of are the strand line beetle Nebria complanata found amongst the debris on Frainslake Beach. Ringed Plover nest on the ground around Frainslake. In the dunes there are scarce lichens, beetles, lies and moths. Lapwings breed in the dune slacks and reptiles such as adder, grass snake, lizard and slow worm can be found.
This is the largest area of sand dunes in Pembrokeshire with the most extensive and most diverse dune slack vegetation. Many other areas have been lost through erosion, sand quarrying and car parking. Wild flowers grow abundantly during spring and early summer.
There are also geological reasons for the designation as an SSSI, the area has good examples of faults, joints, shears and kinks which can clearly be seen in the old red sandstone.
The seaweed hut at the south end of the beach has recently been renovated. An information board can be found inside.
